Marie-Claire & Earl’s European vacation 1969, part1
In 1969 the Chattanooga Andreae’s all went to Europe. Marie-Clare and Earl’s trip was more extensive than everyone else’s. She produced 6 photo albums documenting the trip. Each one will have a separate page on this site.
Many of the pictures in the books were postcards. In general I have not scanned the postcards, restricting myself primarily to actual photos of the trip selected handwritten pages with commentary. (Unfortunately, the postcards are firmly glued to the album pages so I wasn’t able to save them.)
Volume 1 covers their trip through the British Isles.
Ireland—May 1-9
England—May 9 – 21 (Wales—May 18 – 19)
Scotland—May 21-29
The itinerary. The trip is documented in 6 albums as shown here. The sixth book is more of a speculation on a dream museum trip.
Driving route through Ireland.Often MC includes a map showing the local itineraries.
Ireland, May 1-9, 1969
First two days in Ireland.
Western Ireland.MC is often pretty blunt about local conditions.
Ireland, Day 2Not always very PC about ethnicities in those days. Even then "traveller" might be preferable to gypsy, at least in Ireland.
Ireland, Day 3.Those were the days of "Europe on $5 a Day" so frugality in paying for lodgings was prized.
Ireland, Day 4The scenery sounds like an improvement over Western Ireland.
Ireland, Day 5, County Kerry
Ireland, Day 6
Ireland, Day 6Nothing beats oxtail soup in the dungeon.
Ireland, Day 7.
Ireland, Day 7If St. Kevin (Cóemgen) did set up a Christian center 2000 years ago he was a very forward thinking fellow. (Probable dates:498 (reputedly)–3 June 618, a hearty 120 year life.)
Dublin, Ireland. Two very foreign sights: a queue and a pram.
Dublin, IrelandMore interesting Irish sights.
Dublin, Ireland.
Arriving in England!I'm not sure whether we are supposed to know who Hugh and Margaret Cox are.
London, May 11 - May 14.No mention of any bargains at the hotel. Some things never change. Looks like a busy Tuesday!
Cornwall, England.I don't remember MC ever serving a Cornish pasty after she got home. I think this may be a recipe for the tourists. Where is the yellow turnip?
A driving day in England.Huge dandelions are a typical MC touch.
English dining habits.
Cornwall, EnglandIt looks like MC was impressed with the British cuisine.
